UCF Helps Other State Schools Adopt Success Coaching

The University of Central Florida's DirectConnect program has helped it become the leading university in the state for transfer students. Now, UCF will be teaching other schools in the State University System of Florida the secrets to its success. The primary secret is its success coaching program, which pairs students with someone to guide them from the day a transfer student enrolls all the way through graduation. UCF's DirectConnect program, which was a grantee partner of the Johnson Scholarship Foundation, helped UCF become the state school with the highest number of students transferring in – a third of whom were Hispanic students. Read more about the program in a report from Spectrum News at this link.

JSF Representatives Visit Grantee Partners in Minnesota

Last month, JSF CEO Bobby Krause, along with Board of Directors member Bea Awoniyi and Board Consultant King Jordan, traveled to Minnesota and visited with two grantee partners to learn more about their programs. The trio met with educators from Groves Academy in St. Louis Park to learn more about the school's programs tailored to students with learning disabilities and attention challenges. They also toured MDI, a social enterprise manufacturer that provides inclusive employment where people with and without disabilities work side by side, creating customized packaging and providing numerous production services.

Back-to-school tips from Groves Academy's Campbell

Katharine Campbell, Groves Academy's Director of Literacy Partnerships, was featured recently on WCCO News Talk 830 Radio based in Minneapolis with host Sheletta Brundidge. The show's focus was getting students re-engaged as they head back to the classroom, and Campbell shared her thoughts on the best ways to do that. The best thing for parents to do: read aloud to them. Reading books aloud that are above the child's reading level helps them improve their vocabulary and their background knowledge on subjects that may not be familiar to them, she shared. Listen to the full interview at this link.

JSF CEO Speaks at AIBL Conference

This year's annual Reservation Economic Summit was a collaboration of efforts by several organizations focused on Indigenous Peoples, including the National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development (NCAIED) and American Indigenous Business Leaders (AIBL). JSF CEO Bobby Krause was invited to speak to participants of the AIBL conference, an audience comprised primarily of students, their mentors and AIBL sponsors. Krause's message to the students: ask good questions. "Be engaged, be curious, and show your interest," he told the participants. "It will serve you well in business, in friendships, family, and in life."  As a token of appreciation for JSF's support of AIBL, Krause was presented with a traditional handmade blanket by AIBL Executive Director Prairie Bighorn-Blount.
